Our online sleep counsellor training is a blended learning experience revised and adapted from our popular face-to-face sleep counselling course, which equips professionals with the skills and resources necessary to set up and run a sleep counselling service for children and young people with autism and other additional support needs. The training includes supported online learning, interactive live sessions and cohort forum access, alongside practical training, case studies and assessments.

Description

Who can apply?

Our online sleep counsellor training is aimed at professionals working with children and young people with additional support needs. This includes social workers, doctors, health visitors, psychologists, teachers, specialist nurses, youth workers, residential workers, occupational therapists etc.

After completing the training, professionals will be ready to set up and run a sleep counselling service.

Sleep Action expects professionals to commit to a minimum of 2.5 hours per fortnight for providing a sleep counselling service. Those who have trained with us cannot charge parents, carers or young people for any support they provide regarding sleep.

What are the objectives of the Sleep Counselling training course?

During this training course we will deliver the following:

Give participants a comprehensive knowledge of sleep processes and the psychology and physiology of sleep
Give participants a thorough understanding of the range of sleep issues that children and young people may experience
Introduce participants to applying cognitive and behavioural principles and techniques to manage the sleep problems of children and young people
Explain and demonstrate how to set up and run a sleep counselling service

What are the expected outcomes of the Sleep Counselling training course?

At the end of the course, participants will be able to do the following:

Apply cognitive and behavioural principles to managing sleep problems in children with additional support needs
Set up a sleep counselling service in conjunction with Sleep Action to help parents, carers, children and young people with sleep issues
Provide a sleep counselling service for a minimum of 2.5 hours per fortnight, which is free at the point of contact

Structure of the online Sleep Counselling training course

An initial 20 hours of self-led online learning to be completed over 3 weeks
3 consecutive online morning workshops (via Zoom)
8 weeks to complete your first sleep counselling case
Final morning workshop

Certification is dependent on satisfactory completion of your first sleep counselling case. Ongoing support is provided to all of our sleep counsellors.

Two-tier training

Sleep Action believes that the two-tier model is the best way of providing a sleep service.

In the two-tier model, a small number of your team will attend the Sleep Counselling training. As trained sleep counsellors, they will then go on to provide intensive sleep counselling to families of children with additional support needs and those with more complex sleep problems.

A larger number of the team will attend two-day Sleep Awareness training As sleep support workers, they’ll be trained to provide sleep interventions to families of typically developing children and those with less complex sleep problems, with the support of the fully-trained sleep counsellors. In this way all families will be able to access the level of support they require.

The two-tier model can be implemented through commissioned training or, on a smaller scale, through individuals attending our open Sleep Counselling and Sleep Awareness courses.

Course fees

For delegates working in Scotland the cost of attending the course is £1,008 (including VAT). Please note that the cost of your course will be adjusted after your place your order (prior to your invoice being issued) as we have to manually reduce the price based on your location.

For delegates from the rest of the UK the cost of attending a course is £1,124 (including VAT).

Can I commission a local training course?

As with all Sleep Action training, Sleep Counselling training is available for commission. This is suitable for any team in health, education, social work or the voluntary sector who wish to train up to 12 members of staff at a time.
