For many people in prison, sleep can be an issue. This may be a pre-existing issue, or develop due to their setting.
Developed in conjunction with the Scottish Prison Service, the course will provide a good knowledge of sleep, as well as an introduction to the principles of good sleep practices and how to apply those in a prison setting.
With an improved understanding of sleep, you will be able to discuss sleep issues and recognise the various factors that may impact sleep in this population.

What you will learn
Supporting Good Sleep is a self-paced training providing prison staff with a good knowledge of sleep, as well as an introduction to the principles of good sleep practices and how to apply those in a prison setting.
What are the learning objectives of this course?
During this training course, you will be able to:
- Explore the physiology of sleep in adults and how that changes over the lifetime
- Recognise the relationship between sleep and factors relating to life in prison
- Give participants ideas for how to support prisoners to make positive changes to their sleep
Upon training, many delegates feel more confident discussing sleep issues with prisoners.
What are the expected outcomes?
Upon completion of the course, you will be able to:
- Have an understanding of the basics of sleep patterns and processes.
- Better understand some of the areas of life in prison that can impact on sleep.
- Be able to integrate sleep advice to support prisoners to make positive changes to their sleep

Good Sleep for Prison Staff is a short, self-led course for prison staff with little or no sleep training. You’ll learn key concepts and practical tools to help prisoners with sleep difficulties. The course includes videos, clear text, and interactive quizzes, with 3 months’ access to complete it at your own pace. Perfect for professionals wanting to build confidence in supporting better sleep.

Course fees
Our comprehensive sleep training programs are fee-based. The cost listed above includes 3-months’ access to our online training platform. Typically, training is employer-funded as organisations recognise the value of this knowledge in their wider support services.
Requirements
Our online training is delivered via Moodle. A reliable internet connection and a modern browser such as Google Chrome/Safari/Firefox is required.

Who is the Good Sleep for Prison Staff course for?
This course is designed for prison staff who are supporting prisoner health and wellbeing, such as mental health staff, but could also be useful for other staff across the prison. The course aims to provide delegates with knowledge and skills to incorporate sleep advice in their practice.
If you would like to train to be a more hands-on practitioner and work with adults with complex support needs 1:1 on sleep improvement, we would recommend Sleep Counselling for Adults instead.
