Stacey's story
Support for parents and carers
Stacey
Parent of 7 year old daughter
She gave simple suggestions that I just had not thought of in our very sleep deprived state. The results were phenomenal.
It very much felt like two people brainstorming, looking for tweaks and not at all like I was being preached to, or thought badly of for not knowing these things.
With on-going support from our Sleep Counsellor, triggers to the night wakings were identified. Now Melanie sleeps through and can resettle quickly without waking Mum.
Why Stacey contacted Sleep Action
- Stacey wanted strategies to manage and reduce her 7-year-old daughter, Melanie’s night wakenings
- Melanie was falling asleep in class or missing whole days of school, and her teachers were concerned
- Melanie had a diagnosis of autism – her paediatrics team had tried melatonin, but her sleep was still disrupted
- Stacey’s health was suffering because of the broken nights, having knock-on effects on her own disability
How we helped Stacey
Stacey received ongoing support from a Sleep Counsellor for four months, who helped her identify patterns in Melanie’s sleep disruption and cut out triggers. The Counsellor broke down any changes into small steps that were manageable for Stacey and Melanie and easy to implement. The Sleep Counsellor and Stacey worked together to identify strategies that Melanie liked and helped her to resettle through the night.
Melanie’s night wakings were reduced to no more than once every 2-3 weeks. She was able to resettle quickly without waking her mum.
Scottish sleep support line
Sleep Action can offer families resident in Scotland one-to-one sleep support for any child aged 18 months-18 years. Our Sleep Advisors complete a telephone sleep assessment, asking questions on current routines, diet, exercise, and the sleep issue. This can take around an hour. They will then create a sleep plan of cognitive and behavioural changes based on the responses.
