Alyson’s Blog: Addressing a Gap in Vulnerable Adult Sleep Support

Sleep Action has been helping to transform the lives of families and professionals for over 28 years. We are well known for our work with young people and families, our popular Sleep Counselling for Children and Young People and the thousands of families we’ve supported via our Sleep Support Line. But, many aren’t aware of our latest training offering, Sleep Counselling for Adults.

A training course dedicated to adults was always something of interest, but in 2022 after seeing a huge gap in support and training for those working with adults with complex support needs, we developed and launched our Sleep Counselling for Adults course. This pioneering training course was created with practitioners who have lived and professional experience. This training is the first of its kind in the UK, and our first training course designed to support healthy sleep in adults. This course is so unique, we’ve been contacted by professionals as far as Australia and New Zealand who are keen to undertake training.

The results speak for themselves, and our persistence and fine tuning of this practical course has paid off, as in 2024 we were proud to be awarded second place in the prestigious Tomorrow’s Care Awards. The award recognises the vital role Sleep Action’s training plays in equipping those who work in the field of health and social care with skills and knowledge to improve the lives of adults with complex support needs.

Better Care Begins with Better Sleep

Adults with complex support needs encounter sleep challenges at a higher rate and with greater complexity than the general population. The consequences of unmet sleep needs can devastate their mental, physical, and emotional health. Getting better sleep can bring huge benefits in behaviours such as emotional outbursts and self-injury. The impact is enormous and fosters improved relationships, a relief in staffing pressures and improved patient and staff wellbeing.

After training with us, our Sleep Counsellors become empowered to support those in their care. They learn how to implement tailored interventions which meet each individual’s unique needs and circumstances.

Families and carers of adults with learning disabilities and complex support needs, tell us that working with a Sleep Counsellor is life changing. For some, the change in sleep is something they never thought possible as their loved one discovers the energy and resilience to engage in the activities they love.

“Thank you so much for your support at such a difficult time. The whole process was made easy. We felt listened to and understood and the service was exactly what we needed at the time we reached out. was knowledgeable and able to communicate with and support my son, who has ASD. He was a great support to me also. I am very grateful for your support.”

We are so excited to be bringing our Sleep Counselling for Adults course to the Care Show London 2026 on 29th and 30th April. Stop by and see us at stand IN02 and have a chat about how this course can help equip your team with the skills they need to improve health outcomes for adults with complex support needs.
